Ipe Questions and Answers

Ipe FAQs - Page 5
(continued from page 4)

Question: If I do it this way, do I still need to use those "biscuit hidden fasteners" that put those ugly gaps between the boards? Man, I hate big gaps in a beautiful hardwood floor, know what I mean?

Answer: This method will reduce movement to a minimum so that you can install the boards closer together and use Deckmaster Hidden Fasteners so you don't see fasteners... AND you don't have big gaps between the boards as you will with other hidden fasteners.

Question: From what I have read, it does not appear that most carpenters or even deck builders know much about Ipe. True?

Answer: Most deck builders and most carpenters have no experience with Ipe. Besides that, Ipe is also not “carpenter friendly”. We have been building with Ipe for a number of years and have learned how to work with this fine material.

Question: How critical is it for the installer to have Ipe experience?

Answer: Do you want them performing OJT (On the Job Training) on your deck?

Question: From what I have read, the most common problems with Ipe seems to be cupping or bowing of the wood. What causes this?
